THE POWER OF PSYCHOLOGICAL TRIGGERS

If there was ever an example of the power of psychological triggers it is the recent Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme. In Madoff's scheme he used the trigger of scarcity and liking two of the most powerful to get people to invest with him. According to news reports, Madoff made his investments an invitation only affair. You had to either know him or know someone who knew him in order to be able to invest. He also used the trigger of the "friendly thief" to get people to inherently trust him. He preyed on members of his own religious and ethnic circle, a common modus operandi of con men, thus the term CONFIDENCE MEN.



Although in this case these triggers were used to steal from innocent victims. The truth is these same triggers are used to sell us every consumer product we purchase. Why do you constantly see GOING OUT OF BUSINESS sales at furniture stores that never actually seem to go out of business, scarcity trigger. Why do we see elderly actors selling things like reverse mortgages or term life insurance or other products that require a great degree of trust.

I am sitting here watching a documentary on this country's addiction to credit cards and I am just amazed at how easily people are lured into turning to easy credit and consuming things they don't have the money for over investing in themselves and starting their own business of some type for extra money. I definitely have been guilty of this myself so I don't stand in judgment I am just amazed at the mentality we've all been brainwashed into accepting. Now in terms of jobs, people are also brainwashed into a employee mentality. Thinking their only source of income is to "sell" their labor to someone who did take the time to invest in themselves and start a business.



We need a radical transformation in this country to wake people up to the fact that they can:



1. Start a business to give them selves both job security and extra income.

THE GAME:FEEL LIKE YOU'VE BEEN HIT OVER THE HEAD

Have you ever seen the movie, The Game? It has Michael Douglas and Sean Penn in it. Douglas is this powerful investment banker who gets a birthday gift from his brother to play this immersive game where all sorts of unexpected things happen to you. In one part of the game. Douglas" character is knocked out, his money is taken and he wakes up in a ditch south of the border. He has to figure out how to get back to his home in the Bay area of California somehow. He ends up having to beg at a truck stop for a ride back to the U.S. and trade his Rolex for cash.



What's the point of all this? Well, doesn't it sometimes feel like this in your business! Doesn't it sometimes feel like you've been dumped on the side of the road with nothing to show for all your efforts and the money you've spent? You are promised one kind of experience and then get something you totally didn't bargain for. You have to then figure out how to make it back to somewhere safe and familiar.



Well, one thing that happened in the movie is Michael Douglas ended up having a life changing experience via the game and in some ways learned what and who is important in life. It is much the same way for those of us who are entrepreneurs. We're are faced with some difficult choices sometimes and forced to learn a great deal about ourselves and what is truly important.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO OVERCOME OBSTACLES

The Navy Seals have studied how to train their recruits to overcome obstacles and how to handle the normal stress responses. They have done this as a way to help recruits who are close to passing one of their most challenging underwater stress tests. The test involves essentially fighting or engaging in a difficult task while holding your breath for an extended time underwater. The brain's normal response is to either gasp for air or to panic and or surface. What the SEALS have found is that by preparing recruits, and their brains essentially, for how to respond in this situation they can vastly improve the success rate for recruits in this phase of training. The fours areas of training the brain involve:



1. Planning-The frontal lobe of the brain is involved here and what they do is train you in planning for the various circumstances you could face.

2. Rehearsing-This involves actually going through some of the motions and movements that will be involved in the test.

3.Self-Talk-Teaching recruits to talk themselves through the stressful situation.

4.Arousal control-Training recruits to stop or limit the natural stress and emotional responses.



What is the importance of all this you might ask? Well, in our businesses we can respond in a panicked and emotional manner as a natural response to the stresses and uncertainties of being in business. By seeking and getting the appropriate training we can avoid some of the pitfalls that through us off balance and cause us to fail at our goals.

IS IT TIME FOR A MENTAL EXORCISM?
